Alabama Republicans to cast their votes in straw poll

Alabamians will have a chance to let the 2012 Republican Presidential nominees know where they stand at this weekend's Alabama Straw Poll. The event will take place at the Bryant Conference Center on the University of Alabama campus Saturday, Oct. 29. The doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for a light breakfast and the straw poll will officially begin at 9 a.m. and end at 12 p.m.

The event is organized by the West Alabama Republican Assembly (WARA), UA College Republicans and Tuscaloosa Young Republicans. Hermain Cain is the only confirmed candidate attending the event and will make an appearance at 10 a.m. There will also be information booths and state candidates for attendees to visit with.

Book club begins in Bibb County

Book club begins in Bibb County

A new book club for adults will hold its first meeting tonight at the Brent/Centreville Public Library. The club will meet on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the book everyone has read during the prior month.

The book club is a venture of both the Bibb County Community Education and the Brent/Centreville Public Library.

Beverly Brown and Emily Blake are two of the leaders for the book club. Brown said she expects around a dozen people to attend tonight's meeting but she hopes that the club's membership will grow as more people find out about it.

The schedule for the first three books the group plans to read is as follows:

Changes at Bibb County Circuit Clerk's office

Starting Monday, Aug. 22, the Bibb County Circuit Clerk’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will close from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. due to cutbacks to the justice department. These changes will not affect courthouse hours.

As of July 30, the clerk’s office stopped acting as a passport acceptance agent. From now on, residents seeking a passport will have to visit travel.state.gov to find a passport agency.
