Jury selection begins in retrial of Bibb County murder
News

BIBB COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- Jury selection is underway in the retrial of a 2004 Bibb County murder trial.

Jimmy Killingsworth and Troy Connell were arrested and charged with killing Steven Spears and beating Monica Spears during a December 2004 robbery. Monica survived the attack.

However, the Alabama Supreme Court threw out Killingsworth's first conviction for capital murder because a juror in the first trial knew the victims' family.

A juror who knew Monica's family told attorneys during the original jury selection that she held a bias against Killingsworth. They allowed her to sit on the jury anyway and the Ala. Supreme Court overturned Killingworth's conviction in 2011.

He was released from state prison and has been held in the Bibb County Jail awaiting this current trial ever since.

Following his first conviction an all female jury wanted him to serve a life sentence without parole, but the judge sentenced Killingsworth to death.
