Better school lunches may lead to slimmer students

Better school lunches may lead to slimmer students

(HealthDay News) -- Although students who get free or discounted lunches through federal programs are more likely to be obese than students who don't, kids in states that set higher standards for these meals are less likely to suffer that fate, new research finds.

"Students who participate in the school lunch program tend to be more obese in general, not because of the program itself but because they usually come from lower-income households where obesity is more of a problem," explained study author Daniel Taber, a research scientist with the Health Policy Center of the Institute for Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC)- The man suspected of robbing more than a dozen places across Alabama has been captured.

Andre Lavelle Webster is suspected of committing robberies in several cities along I-65 as far south as Dothan and as far north as Huntsville. Authorities arrested him in Montgomery, according to Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell.

Clanton police officers began looking for him after a masked man robbed the Inn of Clanton and an Exxon gas station in their area.

The serial robbery suspect always wore a white mask, perhaps a shirt covering his face, a gray hoodie, gloves and a black bag that he used to stash the money. Clanton Stillwell said he used a large, revolver-style weapon. He was also described by some victims as being very polite and encouraging when they complied with his demands.

Mercedes-Benz advertising for 1,000 new jobs

VANCE, Ala. (AP) - Automaker Mercedes-Benz has begun accepting applications for about 1,000 new jobs it plans to add with the start of C-Class sedans at its Vance assembly plant near Tuscaloosa.

The Tuscaloosa News reports (http://bit.ly/YL4dbq ) that the company expects to begin training workers on the sedan production later this year. Mercedes spokeswoman Felyicia Jerald says the firm will begin making the vehicles for delivery to dealer showrooms sometime next year.

Mercedes plans to add a new sport utility vehicle to its Vance production in 2015. About 400 more workers will be hired for that work. The current hiring, however, is only for the C-Class expansion.
