BIBB COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- The Bibb County High School community is reeling after a junior football player was killed in a car wreck Friday.
State troopers say Desmine Jacquari Phillips lost control of his vehicle and hit another vehicle head on.
Monday, his football coach, Mike McCombs, speaks out about the pain of losing his sixth player in 13 years and about the positive impact Phillips made in school and on the field.
"I have a great sense of loss right now," McCombs said. "You always tell your parents that you're going to coach the players like their own."
Phillips, better known as "Cory," died less than a mile from his home. Phillips was a standout football and basketball players.
The moment McCombs heard the news about the wreck, he along with several players, rushed to be by Phillips' side.
